Fashion History

(Your on-line Fashion Design Study Guide)

Evidence shows the first sewing needle was made from bone and ivory many many years ago.

In Fashion History, the earliest clothing dates back from 20,000 B.C. as evidence by the discovery of sewing needles were made from bone and ivory.  People wore clothes made from natural products then, like animal skin, tree bark, and leaves.

Why do people wear clothes? Because it satisfies physical,  psychological, and social needs. A physical need would be something like the weather. Clothing and garments protect and shield people from the environment. Psychological needs would be to enhance an appearance, or to adorn or decorate. People try to enhance their appearance by changing their hairstyle, jewelry, and accessories. Cultures determine the types of adornment, like tattoos, piercings, etc. These things identify a person or a job that he or she holds. A social need would be an affiliation or standard.  Perhaps someone who wants to rank number one in a position or in society. Each decade represents a social affiliation. Society maintains standards that are represented by clothing.

Fashion through the ages: People dressed according to what society allowed for the social class centuries ago. This is not found as much today. Rare and expensive apparel reflected the social class.  The wealthy dictated fashion. Once again, this is not found as much today.

With the invention of the sewing machine, garments became mass produced.  With the invention of photography, styles were more quickly spread about.  In 1892 Vogue allowed public exposure to Fashion!
